Social Media Detox

Happy Mom Monday to my beautiful friends! I have recently been spending less time on social media. I know that we live in a social media world. We use it for business, to keep in touch with family and friends that we don’t always see and for fun. While I know that it is not realistic to be completely off social media, I have been spending less time on my social media accounts and to be honest, I feel great! It inspired me for today’s blog topic, and I wanted to compile a list of why I think people should take time off social media and what it can do for you!

It allows you to live in the moment. To be honest, before I used to take videos or pictures when I would be out and about and then I would automatically post them to my Instagram story. It just seems like we are so accustomed to being tapped into people’s lives at any moment because people share literally everything on social media. When I started to detox from social media, I realized that living in the moment is so much more enjoyable. Don’t get me wrong, I still take videos and pictures for the memories, but I just don’t post everything on social media. Since having my son, I have realized that he cares more about me being present and living in the moment with him versus being on my phone. Put down the phone and I promise you that you will be so much more immersed in the experience.

Comparison is an evil game. Being away from social media will stop the comparison game. It is so easy to scroll and see the highlight reel of people’s lives. You see what other people have and start to think that you are so far behind. Comparison is one of the worst things you can do for your self-esteem. If you spend less time looking at what others have versus what you do not, you will start to just be thankful for what you have and learn that you are on your own journey and that you should not want anyone else’s anyways. That would be so boring if we were all the same! Enjoy the path you are on and be happy for others that are on a different path than you.

Keep your life more private. Social media is amazing to keep in touch with friends and family all over the world, don’t get me wrong. That is probably my favorite part of social media, but privacy is a beautiful thing. If you talk to people of older generations, they have such a different perspective on life because they do not understand the way younger generations live when it comes to social media. While I love sharing pictures and videos of my son for friends and family to see, I also find it rather creepy that anyone can have access to those pictures, and it has opened my eyes to keeping my family life more private and just for my family and me.

You will be more productive. Spending less time scrolling equals more time to spend on other activities. Instead of scrolling at night, exercise, or spend time on that hobby that you normally don’t have much time for, or just spend some time with the ones you love. Spending less time online will allow you to be more productive in other areas.

Although I feel like the list could go on much longer than the reasons I have provided, these are some of the top reasons that I have been spending less time on social media. Social media is a very beautiful thing, but I find it very necessary in my life to take a break. Whether it is doing a week-long break or just one full day of a social media detox a week it feels so good, and you start to notice that you don’t need social media as much as you think. I hope this blog inspires you to take a break from social media every once in a while, and spend your time doing other things that are so important to you.

I hope you guys have a great rest of your week!

Xoxo, Bri
